Cognitive Testing
To date, there is no tool that can truly assess a person’s intelligence
or IQ. However, cognitive evaluations offer a snapshot of a person’s
intellectual performance. In the same way that a personal trainer will assess
strengths and weaknesses in different muscle groups, a thorough evaluation
attempts to capture a profile of a person’s cognitive skills and strengths,
as well as areas in need of improvement. From this profile, the examiner
can make specific and practical recommendations for the parents and the school.
In order to provide you with an evaluation of that caliber, I sit down with
the parents for a preliminary meeting and a feedback session. The preliminary
meeting takes place before I evaluate your child. This provides me with the
opportunity for an in-depth history and parents can ask any questions that
they might have about the process.
The actual process varies from child to child. It is important to create
an environment where the child is truly doing what they are capable of doing,
while at the same time, maintaining a standardized testing approach. Some
children may need breaks in order to maintain motivation and effort from
one subtest to the next. Some may need to do the evaluation over more than
one session. Others do best when they can continue all the way through in
one session once they have found their momentum.
The feedback session takes place once the report is written. In this session
we go over the report, line by line, so that it is clear how the report comes
to its conclusions. It is also at this point that parents can raise any concerns.
In some cases, there is information in the child’s history that may
be private to the family. In such instances, I generate two versions of the
report: a more detailed report for the parents, and a second version for
the school where the essential information is retained, but confidential
information is protected.

Personality Testing
Personality testing offers a snapshot into how a person perceives and interacts
with the world. To date, there is no tool that can truly tell you who you
are. However, a thorough personality testing can reveal different aspects
of your personality. These aspects include coping style, view of one self,
how you manage your own emotions, your style of relating to other people,
and what aspects of your experience are most salient to you. From this field
of information full of subtle nuances, the evaluator can construct a personality
profile, and make practical recommendations.
Personality Tests that I administer:
• Rorschach Inkblot Test
• Thematic Apperception Test
• Sentence Completion Test
Testing goals:
• Refining diagnosis
• Providing greater understanding of emotional or behavioral symptoms
• Providing a language for introspection
